Tomorrow is our Thanksgiving holiday here in the states and I am so Grateful for so many things this year. I decided to ‘come out of hiding’ and share a very personal journey that I’ve been on since early this summer. ~ Early this year I lost my father after watching him wander through the progressive symptoms of dementia and then suffering a stroke. Within days of that I moved my mom into an assisted living facility while at the same time putting 55 years of belongings into a storage facility until I could figure out what else to do. During this time of monumental stress I found myself reaching for a glass of wine every night, or to be perfectly honest, more than that most nights. I seemed to need the numbing it created and it quickly became a habit. In June I knew I needed to change this habit and I joined an online support group of women from all over the world who were seeking the same thing as I was… support and a forum to talk candidly about what we were feeling and going through. Fast forward to today, my 150th day of being alcohol free, and never feeling better. I can’t explain all the changes I’ve seen happen in myself, but what I can say is that this journey is possible for anyone who wants and needs a change. You just have to be ready, really ready, and willing to look deep inside yourself to face the truth. The last morning that I woke up with a foggy brain because of the wine I drank the night before, I stood in my bedroom closet and looked at a picture of my dad that I keep in there. I said out loud in a quiet voice, ‘I don’t want to drink anymore…’ and that was the last time I did. ~ Being alcohol free is not a punishment, it’s a freeing of shackles that bind so many of us to something we think brings us happiness. If this has been your experience, and you would like someone to talk to, I am an open book and here to listen to your story and share more of mine. Being totally alcohol free is my choice, but it’s not everyone’s. Even if you are just trying to cut back, you are welcome to contact me anytime.
Happy Thanksgiving to all of you, and thank you for all of your support over the past many years, reading my blogs and embracing natural health choices. I appreciate all of you so much!
