One of my favorite things to talk about with people regarding health is our immune system and why keeping it strong is so important. Have any of you ever had a friend or family member that was always complaining about not feeling right, or had a total lack of energy? I think we all have, and we may have experienced these feelings ourselves from time to time. I remember when I was young my mom was always feeding me the things she read that were good for me, like wheat germ, millet, fish oil, spinach, liver… I could go on and on. What Is The Immune System?
The immune system is a complex network of cells and proteins that defends the body against infection. The immune system keeps a record of every germ, ( microbe ) it has ever defeated so it can recognize and destroy the microbe quickly if it ever enters the body again. It’s our body’s defense against disease. The immune system is comprised of several different types of white blood cells that recognize, process, or destroy foreign objects. The first line of defense is the innate immune system, which includes physical barriers such as skin, fingernails, mucous membranes, tears, and ear wax that help prevent invaders from entering the body. The chemical barriers include fatty acids, stomach acid, proteins, and secretions that naturally help to destroy pathogens.
Signs Of A Weakened Immune System
- High stress level
- Continuous ‘cold’ symptoms
- Upset stomach
- Wounds that are slow to heal
- You feel tired a lot
- Infections are common
