A couple of weeks ago I wrote a post about the sun and how to use doTERRA’s essential oils to soothe and protect the skin during and after exposure to it. People who are new to essential oils always enjoy learning about the many ways we can incorporate these oils into our routines for common uses and skincare is always a hot topic. One reader contacted me to ask if I would talk more about the sunscreen part of the post and so I went over all of the ways that a few of our oils could support the skin during sun exposure. Going the natural route is important to many and sometimes the less ingredients, the better. After my talk with this woman I decided to touch a bit more on sunscreens and what you may or may not know.
Sunscreens Aren’t All Evil
Sunscreens are intended to be applied to the body almost every day, till the end of time it seems. As youngsters we are lathered up by our caring parents but the hidden concerns from some of the ingredients should be looked into. Just three years ago when the agency that governs sunscreen safety did an update on the ingredients included in the majority of popular sunscreens, only two ingredients were classified as safe and effective. YIKES! ~ And since the skin is an actual organ, our biggest one by far, what we slather all over it matters. ~ Peoples concerns range from hormone system disruption, skin allergies, respiratory issues, and more targets than I can share on here because of compliance rules. But if you just look up some of the ingredients in your own sunscreens you will get a full blown education on it!
Oils Are Safe Ingredients
The best doTERRA essential oils to use as a sunscreen are the following:
- Helichrysum
- Frankincense
- Arborvitae
- Sandalwood
- Fractionated Coconut Oil for dilution & easy coverage
The #1 favorite combo is to mix a few drops of the Frankincense with a few drops of the Helichrysum oil with an equal amount of the Fractionated Coconut oil and then apply it over the exposed areas. ~ You can do the same using just the Arborvitae or Sandalwood, again mixing with a small amount of the FCO for dilution.
Be Aware Of These…
~ Ingredients in sunscreens to watch out for can be:
- Oxybenzone
- Avobenzone
- Homosalate
- Octinoxate
- Octocrylene
- Octisalate
And not only is it wise to look into what you’re putting onto your skin, think about the environment too. Our coral reefs are bleaching away because of some of the ingredients and chemicals that escape from our skin when we swim in the ocean. Oxybenzone is the #1 enemy of coral reefs and it is found in over 3,500 skin care products. Let that sink in for awhile. ~ For more information about the environment and the chemicals that harm it, go to your favorite search engine and research this topic. And for more essential oil love, contact me at any time. I’m here to help and will look forward to chatting with you!
